Compare routes, stations and the full journey from each home.
Start with where you need to go, then compare the route from each home. Greater Boston’s subway and Commuter Rail serve different journeys, and a nearby track does not always mean a nearby station.

COMMUTER RAIL

Commuter Rail follows a timetable and uses fare zones. Check the train you would actually take, including weekday, weekend and evening service. A subway pass should not be assumed to cover a regional rail journey.
Fitchburg, Lowell and Haverhill routes covered here arrive on the north side. Connect with the Orange or Green Line for the next part of the trip.
Framingham/Worcester, Franklin/Foxboro, Needham and Providence/Stoughton services use Back Bay and South Station. Quincy’s regional trains arrive at South Station. North and South Station are separate terminals; allow for a separate transfer when your journey requires both.

Cambridge · Belmont · Waltham
Porter, Belmont, Waverley, Waltham and Brandeis/Roberts are among the stops covered by our community guides. Inbound terminal: North Station; Red Line interchange: Porter.

Medford · Winchester · Woburn
West Medford, Wedgemere, Winchester Center and Anderson/Woburn provide different boarding points along the route to North Station.

Malden · Melrose

Newton · Brighton · Back Bay

Back Bay
Franklin/Foxboro trains also serve Back Bay on their way to South Station. Check the branch, station and departure when planning an outbound trip.

Back Bay
The Needham Line connects with Back Bay before reaching South Station. It is a separate line from the Framingham/Worcester corridor.

Back Bay
Providence/Stoughton services use the Back Bay and South Station corridor. Check the branch and stopping pattern for the train you choose.

Quincy
Quincy Center has South Station-bound service on Greenbush, Kingston and Fall River/New Bedford lines. Open each line’s timetable rather than assuming all trains make the same stops.
