LIVING IN LEXINGTON
Look closer at local homes, daily routines and ownership responsibilities.
Lexington has no subway or Commuter Rail station. MBTA routes 62 and 76 run between Lexington and Alewife, the Red Line terminal, and the town runs its own bus service, Lexpress, on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Minuteman Bikeway runs 10 miles from Bedford through Lexington Center to Alewife.
That makes the daily route the first filter. Decide whether you will drive, take a bus to Alewife or ride the bikeway, then test the trip from each candidate address at the hour you would make it. Two homes a mile apart can differ a great deal in how close they are to a bus stop or the bikeway.
For a single-family home, compare usable space rather than total square footage, then the condition of the house. List the age and condition of the roof, heating and cooling, electrical service and windows, and ask for permits for additions and finished basements. For new construction or a recent renovation, request the plans, permits, certificate of occupancy and warranty terms. Ask whether the home is on town sewer or a septic system; if it uses septic, the state's Title 5 rules generally require the system to be inspected within two years before the sale, so ask for the report and what it found.
For a townhouse, first confirm whether it is a condominium unit or owned with its own lot; a condominium unit calls for the usual document review: the 6(d) certificate, budget, reserves and rules. Lexington is also covered by the state's MBTA Communities law, which requires zoning for multifamily housing as of right in at least one district, so ask the town what is now permitted near the address you are considering.
Students attend Lexington Public Schools. Confirm the assigned schools for the exact address with the district, and use the state education department's (DESE) district profile for official enrollment and program information.
For commuting, compare the bus routes to Alewife, Lexpress for trips within town, the bikeway and driving. Bus schedules change, so check the current timetable for the stop nearest the home rather than relying on a listing description.
Lexington's FY2026 residential rate is $12.31 per $1,000 of assessed value, or $1,231 a year for each $100,000 of assessment. Ask the assessor which personal exemptions might apply to you, and ask the seller for the most recent tax bill.
Beyond tax, the larger costs are usually in the house: roof, heating and cooling, windows, drainage and, for a home on septic, the condition of the system and any repair the inspection calls for. Compare prices on the visible condition and the records available, then use the inspection during the contract period to refine the budget and the decision. FY2027 rates had not been certified at the time of writing.
